This project for MENCAP provides the opportunity for me to build on my previous experience of working with children in the local community and to introduce them to the enamel process. The children have generated the initial art work which was inspired by the sounds and images produced by the Soundbeam team. These drawings and paintings will be used to create a series of laser-cut vitreous enamel panels for for permanent display in either the new health or youth centre.

The characteristics of vitreous enamel are perfect for both small and large scale projects; enamel on metal has unique delicacy, luminosity and tactile qualities, which on a functional level give a permanent and easily cleanable surface. Basically vitreous enamel is glass bonded onto metal under heat. However, the firing transforms the enamel and gives the whole process a feeling of alchemy, producing a richly coloured and vibrant surface embellishment. This is achieved using drawing, painting, printmaking and decorative techniques.

(See 'community projects' for more information on this collaboration.)
