Artist's Statement – relating to Portishead Quays artwork:

Ann ChristopherThe first sculpture installed on the site in 2001 – 'Towards The Sky' a 5.5 metre rust coloured corten steel sculpture was inspired by the old lock gates, the form and material reflecting the quayside, boatyard and industrial nature of the original site, its height and presence acting as a focal point within the development.

The proposed sculpture will stand astride an 11 metre long illuminated pale green glass strip 30 m wide set flush with the ground.

The 6 metre long main body of the sculpture will be constructed from galvanized steel to reflect the industrial element of the old power station - along each curved edge will be side emission fibre optic strands which will have moving light rippling through them. Two spikes rise up 6.5 metres towards the sky with a cool blue / green LED light strip up the one narrow edge of each spike.

The choice of colours (green / blue / white) reflect the colour of electricity with the lighting effects designed to imply that the energy source is still there below the ground.
