This piece was inspired by the sail training vessel which was anchored in Portishead. The image represents a young man being forced into the navy. The quote is by Tennyson and was used when the training vessel was first opened by Charles Kingsley of "Waterbabies" fame. The stone is Wath Limestone from Yorkshire and the sculpture is in two pieces, plinth and boat. The stone is carved with diamond saws and then mallet and chisel, before being rubbed with a carborundum block. All my work is produced in this way.
